A Message from Mayor Mike Callahan

Cheverlians,

Welcome to Cheverly Day 2015! It is my sincerest hope that each and every Cheverly resident comes by Town Park on May16th to say "Hello" to their neighbors and meet new friends.

And why wouldn't you? Once again the Cheverly Day Committee has provided us with a wonderful line-up of activities for people of all ages. We have a tremendous line-up of musicians to providing great entertainment throughout the day. Children of all ages will love the Mid-Way, Miniature Golf Course, Laser Tag, Dunk Tank and the Ping Pong Ball Flume. Adults will have the opportunity to play Softball, Corn Hole, Horseshoes, FoosBall and of course, stop and socialize in the Beer Garden.

There should be a moratorium on "home cooking" throughout town -- eat at Town Park and feast on the great food choices available. Old standards like Good Times Catering, Funnel Cakes and Simple Pleasures Ice Cream will be joined by the Crab Cab, Chez Adilmos, SOL Mexicangrill, and Cheverly's own Unforgettable Flavors.

This year we look to improve the Cheverly Day Public Transit System, as buses will be circulating throughout town bringing people to and from the park from 2pm to 6pm. And of course the Fireworks! So please come join us as we celebrate living in Cheverly.

Finally, please join me in celebrating our Mayor’s Awardees for 2015: Luanne Smith and Oliver Greaves. Take a moment to thank Luanne Smith (Volunteer of the Year) for all of her efforts to support the Boys and Girls Club and especially women's softball for over 20 years, and Oliver Greaves (Jack Wheat Award) for 21 years of service to Cheverly in the Public Works Department.

See you at Cheverly Day 2015!

Three Days to Go! A special message from the Mayor

A Cheverly Day Message from Mayor Mike Callahan

Oh My Gosh!! Quick -- call the Mayor! Something has to be done! Clearly, someone really messed up and mistakenly scheduled both Cheverly Day and Cheverly Community Market on May 18th.

Wait a minute, calm down, relax, and take a deep breath!
You mean to tell me this was done intentionally?

The leaders of these two great Cheverly traditions decided to get together and create one simply fabulous day! Not since Peanut Butter and Jelly, Ham and Cheese, Horse and Carriage, or the Fluffernutter (oh, forget the Fluffernutter) has anyone had an idea great as this.

Just imagine, activity in Town park from dawn to dusk: Market Vendors, Cicada Crunch 5K (with real cicadas), Music in the Park, a Midway, Laser Tag, Community Tables, Softball, 3 on 3 Basketball, and, of course, the Fireworks. Only a fireworks display could climax a day like that.

So please come out to Town Park and help your friends and neighbors celebrate Cheverly’s 82nd Birthday. The children will love the midway, the teens will love the laser tag, and everyone will love the music and fireworks.

Stop by the Community Market in the morning and pick up the makings for a picnic lunch or stop by one of the delicious food vendors – but come spend the day.

On behalf of all of the great volunteers who organize Cheverly Day and Cheverly Community Market, welcome to the best day of the year!!

A Cheverly Day Message from Mayor Mike Callahan
Neighbors,
Made In Cheverly”!! What a great theme for Cheverly’s 81st Birthday Party. The Cheverly Day Committee is featuring the works of Cheverly artists and artisans at Town Park. This is a rare opportunity to see just how talented your friends and neighbors are, so take a moment to visit this very special Art Show.
The question has been raised by the Cheverly Day organizers, “What does ‘Made In Cheverly’ mean to you?” So I figured I’d take a shot. To be totally honest, the organizers insisted I take a shot.
My answer is “Anything can be made in Cheverly”. What I’ve found is that Cheverly is a place where anything can happen; it just takes someone with an idea. I saw this in action 20 years ago when Peggy and her friends decided that St. Ambrose needed a playground, not a huge parking lot. Presto, Fun Day was created to raise funds and then, five years later, a playground was installed.
Cheverly is a unique town where neighbors rally together to make things happen. As you look around town, there are so many landmarks to people and organizations who “Made Something in Cheverly” that add to the fabric of our community. The list is way too long, but here are a few recent examples: Truck Touch, the Lower Beaverdam Trail, the Cheverly Soccer Club, the Community Market, the Garden Club Plant Sale, Bike to School Day, the Robotics Club, the VineCorp Youth Organization, our Community Listservs, and the list goes on.
On Cheverly Day, the Mayor gets the unique honor of recognizing two citizens, organizations, or employees for “Making Something In Cheverly”. This year it is my honor to award Doug Alexander and Nick and Kristy D’Angelo these awards.
Doug Alexander led an effort to begin a composting program in Cheverly. Doug raised funds from various sources to offer composting bins at reduced rates, sold the bins at every imaginable community event, and offered workshops to newbies. Thanks to his efforts, there have been over 150 composting bins distributed throughout town and thousands of pounds of trash removed from the waste stream, saving taxpayers money.
Nick and Kristy D’Angelo have volunteered as the Chairmen of the Cheverly Day Committee for many years. Their efforts have preserved this day as an opportunity for all Cheverly residents to gather and renew their relationships. Working together with committed friends and neighbors such as Micah Watson, Pat Nelson, Bruce Mitchell, and David Thorpe, Nick and Kristi have passed on a tradition that adults and children look forward to every year.
Thanks to Doug, Nick, Kristy and to all who have Made Something in Cheverly!
Mike Callahan, Mayor
